The city of Richfield, seconded by the Richfield Historical Society and leading Minnesota aviation heritage groups—Northwest Airlines History Centre, Retired Northwest Pilots Association, Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame, and Minnesota Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 25—has declared June 12, 2010, Mal Freeburg Day in honor of the 1930s-era pilot and hero.

Freeburg’s reputation for bravery drew national attention (including the cover of the Wheaties box!) during the Thirties. In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented him with the United States Air Mail Flyers Medal of Honor. During that year, and again in 1934, the Northwest Airlines pilot made successful emergency landings of two seriously damaged passenger planes without causing injury to passengers and crew.

On the afternoon of the 12th, the public is invited to join in a celebration of Mal Freeburg’s career with a host of aviation–related activities at Richfield’s Veterans Memorial Park, 64th Street and Portland Avenue. The program features exhibits, experimental aircraft, remote control flying, and toddlers to 12 years olds flying balsawood Mal Freeburg airplanes can earn a “pilot’s license.” The afternoon program runs from 2-5pm.

Barbara Sommer, author of Hard Work and a Good Deal: The Civilian Conservation Corps in Minnesota will discuss the practice of oral history, and how it shaped her book. The Civilian Conservation Corps – born out of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal at the height of the Great Depression – supplied jobs to more then 77,000 Minnesotans in need. Their work left a lasting legacy, visible today in Minnesota’s thriving forests, state park amenities, and soil conservation practices. Hard Work and a Good Deal received the 2009 Minnesota Book Award in the Minnesota Category, the 2009 Northeast Minnesota Book Award in the General Nonfiction Category, and a 2009 Award of Merit from the Association for State and Local History.
