A man stopped by the Richfield History Center today just to ask directions. Happy to oblige, I looked around for a map…and I saw plenty of them. We have many historical maps but nary a one was what I could say was “modern.” Undaunted, I used a large format aerial photo from 1940 to point him in the right direction. Luckily, all the streets he needed to reach his destination had already been plotted by 1940! I could have used another map on display but it was from 1886 and I couldn’t very well have told him to take a right at the Irwin Farm, now could I?

Richfield Historical Society is lucky to have a number of dedicated volunteers and a strong intern program. Whether its helping visitors find genealogical materials in the reading room, pulling weeds, researching future exhibits, or serving on the board of directors, we are the recipient of hundreds of hours of time given as a gift by a few dozen members of our community. Our interns are the driving force behind the exhibits that you see in our galleries. They get hands-on and minds-on experience as they take the exhibit from idea to reality in the course of a summer or a semester. I can’t say enough good things about volunteers and interns! If you want in on the fun, stop by, email, or call!

If you’ve stopped by the History Center in the past week, you probably noticed that the whole main gallery is a mess! That’s exactly how we want it. Out of that construction zone will come our new exhibit Richfield: House & Home. All of us here at RHS are excited about this fun and interactive exhibit. We are taking a closer look at those “lookalike” houses of Richfield and thinking about the entire city as one big artifact that can tell us about the time when many of these houses were built. A visitor asked me a few months ago, “What makes a rambler a rambler?” I made sure that my answer ended with ” …and come back in the fall for this fabulous exhibit we are developing!” Opening night is on September 10th so we better get building! See you there!
